Vietnamese Lessons!
Xin Chao! Back in Toronto, I've had the chance to teach an avid student some basic Vietnamese lessons. He was looking to learn some Vietnamese as he will be vacationing in the beautiful beach town of Mui Ne with his Vietnamese wife and learning to kitesurf, and he wanted to be able to get around on his own.
How did I find such a student in Toronto? Well, I was looking to carry on my craft of teaching English when I returned to Canada and I posted ads for private English lessons, which contained descriptions of my experience in Vietnam. This motivated man happened upon my ad and asked me whether I'd be willing to teach him Vietnamese, and after confirming with him that I wasn't fully fluent in Vietnamese but had rather intermediate/conversational knowledge, we started our basic Vietnamese lessons and have been continuing since. I am happy to share the lessons with you as they are very easy to follow and we are seeing great progress in my Canadian student!
The lessons are fully customized for my student, and created on a weekly basis. I am listing them in chronological order based on every lesson we've had. To make best use of them, follow the same order and do all of the homework assigned for practice! Remember, the key to learning a language is perseverance, and practice, practice, practice! And the rewards of learning a brand new language are always plentiful. As they say, another language, another soul! Happy learning!
Note 1: My student is a uni-lingual anglophone with no prior knowledge of any Vietnamese, let alone Asian language, which as you may know is a tonal language. These lessons are best taught of course with the guidance of a live person who can teach you the Vietnamese tones and pronunciation, which are critical in the language. With his dedication and perseverance, my student went from not being able to distinguish between any of the tones, to being able to write full Vietnamese sentences, complete with all of the accents and diacritics.
Note 2: These lessons formed just the backbone of our lessons, however there is also a lot of interactive practice that is done with my student, including pronunciation drills, dictations, role-plays, practice conversations. You definitely need to practice with a Vietnamese person in order to really learn well. Goodluck!
Note 3: Please keep in mind that these lessons are fully custom-tailored to my student's learning style, level, personal life, and goals for learning Vietnamese. Therefore the priorities in the progression of the lessons match with those of my student's needs.
Note 4: Some homework sheets are missing from the lessons because I didn't keep a soft copy of them. Apologies!
Note 5: Finally, these lessons were meant just for private teaching with my student. The images and the pronunciation chart were all taken from the Internet with no copyright infringement intended! Please use the lessons just for your personal learning purposes.
